Incorporating Truck Days Into Center Curriculum

January 18, 2013

When the centers around Cary, NC, decided to host a Truck Day event to raise money for the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, teachers Jen Ritzert and Jaleesa Bartley at Bright Horizons Family Solutions at RTP in Durham decided to get the kids even more excited by incorporating the event into the curriculum.

Art Smart: Design Process

A child in the art studioIn art studio, the children in the Kindergarten prep class learned to create a truck sculpture by following the design process. First, they sketched and colored to generate ideas. Then they built the frame of the truck with found objects. Finally, they painted details and glued accessories. The vehicle they created was the “Fire Smoothie Truck” in honor of Truck Day.

Our World: Collaboration

A group of children create a fire smoothie truckThe students learned to work collaboratively by working as a team to create the “Fire Smoothie Truck.” Some of the children preferred to build the frame of the sculpture while others chose to focus on painting. Everyone worked worked together to create a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

Truck Days is a special event for Bright Horizons employees, children, families, and the surrounding communities. Truck Days help raise funds in support of the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, and ties into Parent Marketing initiatives to help bring awareness to Bright Horizons centers. And it’s just fun!
